Even you have to admit that the optics of this are really really bad. Bill Clinton is reckoned to be some brilliant political strategist, "he smartest guy in the room". He had to know how bad this would look so the only logical conclusion is that he felt the meeting was critical to the campaign and basically worth the risk.
