What if wanting a gun becomes considered a disorder?
Anyway, in light of your posts, what do you think can be done?
Btw if you get the chance ask your friend about the scans on the serial killers.
Also I caught mention on a recent tedtalk that they believe some sort of chemical - seratonin? in too great or not enough (can't remember!) present in the cerebral cortex during fetal development can lead to the types of anger that display as these shootings.
And then, there's the fact that these mass shootings account for a very small percentage of overall gun violence.

I don't think we yet understand enough to say that if a brain scan shows a certain pattern that you'll become a mass murderer. Even if they did, should we require brain scans of everyone who wants to purchase a firearm or some sort of neonatal testing for seratonin levels?
Hell, the NRA doesn't even want to get rid of the loophole that allows for 40% of gun sales to go without a background check. Imagine how they, the right wing nutjobs, and civil libertarians would react to mandatory brain scans.

Actually finn perhaps neonatal screening will become normal if they establish a strong enough link.
I suspect the gun show loopholes' days are numbered. I can be somewhat pacified, if it is unobtrustive, and if the rejection criteria are clearly defined.
That government power creeps is undeniable. For that reason I understand the resistance to expanded gun regulation.

Hey, there are power creeps in the corporate world as well. In fact, I've met several creeps in the corporate world (and some nice folks, too).

Oh, for crying out loud. Would you guys stop grasping at straws?
And, just who has said anything about banning ALL guns, anyways?
Maybe we should intentionally issue the mentally ill whatever weapon they like, up to and including nuclear tipped ICBMs.....because the 2nd Amendment says "....shall not be abridged."......So obviously, even murderous lunatics have the right to bear arms?
You know what, Pete, you're onto something...I am beginning to believe you rightwingers are nuts. And, the more you keep up this assinine stubborness, the more convinced I am. And guess what, Bud.....I'm not alone.
Regards,
Dave

Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. When applied to the 2004 U.S. Census residential population estimate for ages 18 and older, this figure translates to 57.7 million people.

With unimpeded access to firearms, we probably have millions of Americans who own firearms and suffer from sort of mental illness and nothing other than impeding access to the most destructive of these types of firearms will do any good. The whole "lock up the crazies" argument is a red herring used to deflect attention from our pathetic gun laws.

Excellent post!
Thank you.

What is being missed in the whole debate on the steps being put forward at this time, what to do about the guns already in circulation. We could stop the sale of all weapons from this day forward. The US will have more guns in the hands of the citizens the ten other countries combined.
So then there will be those who will say of the laws enacted, "See it didn't stop the violence!" So in the end shootings will continue to occur until it will be so bad. Then and only then will it shut up the gun lobby and the NRA. The round up of guns will begin and at that time, there will be those who decide to go out in Charleston Heston fashion.

I'm gonna get more guns. With those statistics, my neighbor could go crazy any minute now.

Maybe the Prez is on to something tasking the CDC to investigate gun violence? It is looking more and more like some sort of infectious disease.
