There's media and there's media. You are conflating news media and partisan web channels, which are about the only place you'll find the staged shot of the cute kids and their cute sign.
Of course both parties do what they can to use the news. But you're getting close to saying the Democrats ginned up the whole thing, which would require they 'own' such outlets as CNN and the Washington Post. That idea seems incredible.
The story had legs because there was compelling video that fit into an existing meme, and the police totally mishandled PR on their end in every way imaginable, even arresting journalists for craps sake.
