There's media and there's media. You are conflating news media and partisan web channels, which are about the only place you'll find the staged shot of the cute kids and their cute sign.
Of course both parties do what they can to use the news. But you're getting close to saying the Democrats ginned up the whole thing, which would require they 'own' such outlets as CNN and the Washington Post. That idea seems incredible.
The story had legs because there was compelling video that fit into an existing meme, and the police totally mishandled PR on their end in every way imaginable, even arresting journalists for craps sake.

I was wondering that myself.
Maybe they brought in Graham Greene as a consultant.
He could tell you how much change Brown had in his pockets when he was shot.

I'd say the story had legs because of the subsequent street demonstrations/riots (and the police handling thereof), along with the media pumping the story to keep eyeballs on the TV. If people are looking for a poster child to undergird their concerns about police abuse of innocent African-Americans, I'd suggest they pick a better example.
As for Michael Brown's mom wanting to hold the party responsible for her son's death to account, I'd suggest she start her quest with a brief glance at a mirror.

Well he got half his genes for his dark skin from her, so I guess she is at least partly to blame.

That may be your view. It's not mine.

Again, here are the two laborers who saw the incident, and recounted Wilson attempting to surrender as he was killed. There are witnesses, all who were called to testify before the grand jury, who recounted him attempting to surrender, from a 280 degree panorama. That is from both sides of the street, a 45 degree slice behind Wilson, and a little more than 45 degree slice behind Brown.

All are relatively consistent with the pattern of shots. To a person, excluding Wilson, all perceived Brown to be surrendering.
The laborers are still insistent that Brown was surrendering. And they have nothing to do with the Ferguson apartment community.
And by the way, some of you also might want to read up on the strongarm robbery....

If so, justice will be served. Despite any misgivings I may have about the grand jury system, I still trust it more than mob rule.

Finnbow, in this case, justice is not going to be served; it is going to be avoided.
On the other hand, after the grand jury is dissolved without any charges being advanced, mobs are going to rule, on both sides of the river. The National Guard units in southern Illinois and Missouri are busy creating contingency plans with local law enforcement, State Highway Patrol, and other agencies on everyones' areas of responsibility. All hell is going to break loose, regionwide.
I would expect this to all go down following the first large snowfall in subzero January.

So, should he be convicted solely to placate the mob?

Convicted is totally up to the jury. But he should be tried in open court, so as not to anger the justly concerned citizens, who otherwise will be tempted toward mob action.
You write these people off as if they are all one thing: nothing but a criminal mob every day, and thus deserving of no consideration, and no justice.
