When I was more active in the business, the program I was in caused me to have a majority of clients who were young single mothers. Many of them had boyfriends, and (of course this is anecdotal) many of the women of smaller stature had these big, burly guys in their lives. I asked a few what that was all about and for the most part the answer was always the same.

Basically...it's scary being a woman in this culture, much less a little woman. Being on the arm of a big man provides a sense of security they otherwise rarely have.
