Lol!
Eddie, I mean we can't stop. Consider - we did this accidently, as a byproduct of living. The scale is enormous, and we just can't slow down, because if what we're doing now has already started the process we need less than what we're doing now.
Make sense? After rereading that I'm not sure lol.
And we can't even slow down the growth of greenhouse gas emissions, let alone lower it overall! Love it or hate it, Kyoto was a failure.
So there you go We need to get into space if we want to save the planet, only way.
Pete

No, move heavy industry and power generation to space, make Earth a garden planet.
We'd also be a LOT richer

We would need a really long extension cord.

Unless we find a way to efficiently transmit power without wires. And that just may become possible one day.

Huge reflecting panels creating a wide beam low intensity laser transfering solar energy to a collecting station(s) on Earth. Simple
Really, it's amazing what we already know we can do. There just isn't the will.

This is a great example of technology we could be developing right now. There have been experiments using, I believe, microwave transmission to get it back to Earth. We could develop this in the next decade if we chose to. Similarly, carbon nano tube experiments have been demonstrated a realistic approach to a so called "Space Elevator" that would make getting up and back much easier and less expensive.
The thing is, all of this takes more upfront investment to develop and build than will pay off in a reasonable period of time. So it will take a government program to make it happen. But imagine the pay off. Simultaneously we develop advanced battery technology, and ten or fifteen years from now we can tell the middle-east we don't need their oil.

Honestly though, it's not rising waters that worries me. From the story I grew up hearing, .. isn't it fire we sposed to get destroyed by 'next time' ?

Really doesn't matter who's words they are, the point is the same. It's kinda stupid. As D-Ray points out, the ice that's melting is currently *above* sea level, a fact the analogy neglects to recognize.

Yep.
And there isn't the will, because no one wants to pay for it. It would seem that some among us have decided that any notion of making electricity without burning fossil fuels, or splitting atoms, is just another kooky left-wing dumbass idea. (Ignoring the fact that people once thought electricity itself was "the work of the devil", and that splitting atoms was "impossible".)
Tune your AM dial to your local EIB network station, to find the source of this backward way of thinking.
