Sounds like they're blowing smoke, if you ask me. I'd be looking into a gen set tho for my house if I lived in the midwest. You can transfer electricity long distances but there has to be a connection. Most of Texas has their own grid disconnected from the two grids supplying the rest of the country. Some libertarian nonsense behind that decision, if I recall.

Texas simply skimped on weatherizing their equipment and the citizens are paying a heavy price, ie 50 dead so far and untold millions suffering with undrinkable water. Gotta love these Ayn Rand worshiping chuckleheads.

I've read where Austin was losing hundreds of millions of gallons of water.

And that's just in Austin. When all those pipes that are busted but still frozen thaw out it's going to be real bad.

Arrow Meanwhile in Bizarro World AKA tRumpville...

Former tRump advisor Larry Kudlow blames the power grid failure in Texas on president Biden.

Quote:
Donald Trump’s former economic adviser has claimed that the Texas winter storm power outages are “the consequences” of Joe Biden being in the White House.
Mr Kudlow was happy to blame it on Mr Biden, who has been president for one month, but he did not try and explain how the president had caused the unprecedented grid failure.
These comments happily beamed into your brain courtesy of Faux News*. At least he didn't say it was space lasers

I'm not positive but I don't think that there is much of a transmission intertie between Texas and other regional reliability councils. There are just two DC interties; I don't know how much power they can pass through. But yes, it is possible to send power that far. Kansas City is pretty close to Texas as part of the Southwest Power Pool.

Sounds more like an austerity plan. Power moves within a grid from the nearest generator with power to spare (they actually borrow) and then to the next and so on. Theoretically if Texas was connected to one of the two national grids, power could have been sent from neighboring states with extra power generating capacity or with additional power available on hand. And states beyond their neighbors could have made up for their deficiency if possible.

One would think that when the power went out most homeowners would have known that they needed to shut the main water valve and open taps to drain any standing water.

Few people know that, or could find or operate the pertinent valves if they did.

When you seldom experience sub-freezing temps for decades knowing what to do to handle it isn't fresh in your mind. Warnings could have and should have gone out ahead of time since it was known what was coming. Instead, after the fact we have blaming and finger pointing. Since there's only a month or so of winter left will anything get done to prevent a recurrence?
