During Stampp's time it became widely accepted, outside of the South, that Johnson's and Grant's administrations were not radical. However, Reconstruction policy was driven by what was known as the radical wing of the Republican party. You know, radical Republicans. The very same radicals gave Lincoln fits during the war and came pretty close to impeaching Johnson.
What I find history cool is that back in those days the southern Democrats were referred to as Conservatives and the southern Republicans as Radicals.
