I think the Italians were voting for a new Rome. They wanted Italy to be great as a nation and people, and they are an emotionally romantic people. One of my best childhood friends was pure third generation Italian. My first real GF was 2.5 generation Italian. Man could she kiss. I'd tell you my Uncle Tony's (second generation) joke about how Dundalk got it's name, but don't want to appear politically incorrect. The punch line is "don't dock" delivered with a first generation accent.
