Rape, genocide and enslavement are rather consequential and extreme acts. They cannot be encompassed within the framework of standards of decency.
Neither are they quaint relics of a bygone age. Armenia, the Shoah, Pol Pot and Daesh should be ample proof of that*. These barbarities have always been with us and always will as long as we dismiss them as isolated instances of the past or, as with Columbus, ignore them totally while lionizing him as some sort of "Hero of the Western World."
*I didn't specifically mention the American genocide perpetrated against the Native Americans because I view it as a continuation of what Columbus began.
