I'm not defensive. I'm just amused that people still give a shit about somebody in the 15th century not comporting with 21st century standards of decency.

Columbus can suck it.

But that's just my opinion.

Rape, genocide and enslavement are rather consequential and extreme acts. They cannot be encompassed within the framework of standards of decency.

Neither are they quaint relics of a bygone age. Armenia, the Shoah, Pol Pot and Daesh should be ample proof of that*. These barbarities have always been with us and always will as long as we dismiss them as isolated instances of the past or, as with Columbus, ignore them totally while lionizing him as some sort of "Hero of the Western World."

*I didn't specifically mention the American genocide perpetrated against the Native Americans because I view it as a continuation of what Columbus began.

My nation invaded Iraq. I would be consumed with self-loathing if I ever at any time for one minute favored that crime against peace.

Sometimes self-loathing is not sick. Sometimes avoiding it is.

Sorry but history has a place and should be learned from, and granted still effects us to this day.

But not one of us picked the uniform we wear from birth. That should be on everyones mind when thinking about our shared history.

Every peoples have a story of injustice. The solution is to see this and try and stop it from happening again and again.

It's not about wallowing in guilt over something that happened over 500 years ago. It's about not wanting to whitewash history of our culture through the glorification of one of our worst. Columbus was a venal vainglorious monster.

I don't get the day off, so I don't care.

Columbus and Magellan.........

Their most important pioneering contribution is this; They proved that you don't fall off the edge if you sail too far, which was contrary to Christian dogma at the time.

And thus, more people began to wonder if the church is full of shit...............

Bravo Boys! Whether that was your intention or not; Well done!

This is why some people hate it when you dredge history up. It tends to prove their heroes were merely human, the past was not utopian, their religion fallible to downright silly and their country was never pure. Obliterated delusions can be a tough thing for the simpleminded to deal with.

Just spend a few minutes reading Tea Party blogs. You'll see who I'm talking about............
