Apparently Mom was a right wing gun nut too.

Quote:
Ms. Harper, who divorced her husband a decade ago, appears to have been by far the most significant figure in her son’s troubled life; neighbors say he rarely left their apartment. Unlike his father, who said on television that he had no idea Mr. Harper-Mercer cared so deeply about guns, his mother was well aware of his fascination. In fact, she shared it: In a series of online postings over a decade, Ms. Harper, a nurse, said she kept numerous firearms in her home and expressed pride in her knowledge about them, as well as in her son’s expertise on the subject.

She also opened up about her difficulties raising a son who used to bang his head against the wall, and said that both she and her son struggled with Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. She tried to counsel others whose children faced similar problems. All the while, she expressed hope that her son could lead a successful life in finance or as a filmmaker.

In an online forum, answering a question about state gun laws several years ago, Ms. Harper took a jab at “lame states” that impose limits on keeping loaded firearms in the home, and noted that she had AR-15 and AK-47 semiautomatic rifles, along with a Glock handgun. She also indicated that her son, who lived with her, was well versed in guns, citing him as her source of information on gun laws, saying he “has much knowledge in this field.”

“I keep two full mags in my Glock case. And the ARs & AKs all have loaded mags,” Ms. Harper wrote. “No one will be ‘dropping’ by my house uninvited without acknowledgement.”

Law enforcement officials have said they recovered 14 firearms and spare ammunition magazines that were purchased legally either by Mr. Harper-Mercer, 26, or an unnamed relative. Mr. Harper-Mercer had six guns with him when he entered a classroom building on Thursday and started firing on a writing class in which he was enrolled; the rest were found in the second-floor apartment he shared with his mother.

Boreas, I do not realize that my "gunshit" is a freudian pun, but no biggie.

Tom Joad, your quote is horrible.

It isn't. I misread your post.

Almost an understatement, this compounds the degree of dysfunction in our self-serving self-destructive wackadoodle wingnut gun culture.

You're right Don, I'm just tired of this bs and I feel like something dramatic needs to change in the long-term. Furthermore - and this is just a suspicion - I'd bet very few of those geniuses who hold "From my cold dead hands" signs would have the guts to actually fight for their weapons and risk their lives and freedom, should the government actually come for them, hypothetically.

I don't need it, and I trust those who have been professionally trained with them (the police, the SWAT teams, the US military) to use them to protect me should the need arise.
I appreciate the sentiment of what you say here. Regarding the part I highlighted in bold: would you, theoretically, be willing to completely give up your right to own any firearms if it would save one life? I understand this is a difficult question that's only theoretical, and I'm not trying to trip you up or turn anything around on you, just curious. Apologies if I'm misreading you in any way, there's a few pages toward the end of this thread I haven't read yet.

The twisted logic of these people is evidence in itself that proves they are out of their minds. And, the more adamant they become in using such nonsensical arguments, the more one questions the wisdom of attempting rational dialog with them at all.
That makes two of us - it's very tiring and also disappointing that so many fail to see what's logically wrong with the whole "Cars kill people, let's ban those too!" meme. For example, guns are designed specifically to kill, cars are not. Moreover, the latter is essential to the functioning of our society, the former really isn't (Are there really that many people in the U.S. who must hunt to survive? I suggest we need to urgently address the basic needs of those people immediately, as no one should have to hunt to eat at this point in the history of our country).

I wanted to say more addressing the many sane, competent and reasonable gun owners out there who are being put in a difficult position these days by murdering maniacs and the immoral NRA, but I'm pressed for time so maybe later...

What is a most sobering thought, when one knows many many people like her and the son who worship guns. Makes one wounder just how many are just one argument or act of perceived slight away from going the same route.

Yes.....
And when children grow up in a gun obsessed household.... Using a gun to address an issue becomes the norm rather than the extreme.

Indeed. They are all responsible gun owners until they aren't....

How long do we want to keep playing that little game of roulette...?

So....... When do we reach the tipping point?
The point where enough people say this has got to stop?

I'm hoping the up coming election will push some politicians into taking a firm stand for safe and sane gun laws.

Now here's something that I agree with Carson on.

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016...wounds-n439251

Quote:
Ben Carson on Wednesday said he wants to "plant in people's minds" the idea that they should attempt to rush an active shooter, the latest in a string of controversial comments the GOP presidential candidate has made in response to last week's mass shooting in Oregon.

On Tuesday, Carson said he "would not just stand there and let him shoot me. I would say, 'Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me but he can't get us all.'"
