Lots of stuff is and is not popular with Americans. Theism and religion are both very popular with Americans. That's pretty much all I need to remind me of how fucked-up Americans can be. But there are so many other things, like our fondness for drunk driving. Our geopolitical pompous arrogance. We could go on for pages, eh? The graphic image was too big, so I posted the link to the page. The comparison on the bottom pretty much tells the whole story. We're 20th in the world in per capita dollars spent on education and 1st in per capita dollars spent on incarceration.

So for the sake of argument, let's assume that the subject statement is legit. Who cares what most Americans think? Most Americans are idiots.

I have a gun, I don't need it now, I may or may never need it. But, living in the hills out of town, I may need it for home protection someday. You've got it reversed. Americans are not thinking which is why they are idiots. The way to obtain/maintain power is through fear and the way to maintain fear is through ignorance. Education counters ignorance. Overall our nation's education system was improving up though the late 60s/early 70s. Ignorance was on the decline and then everything changed...

OK, so I read it again and it seems to say that an incorrect unsupported perception of the crime rate is affecting opinion on firearm regulation. My perception of what has happened is that a rightist freakout over having a Democrat blackish POTUS has folks that already own guns and ammo irrationally buying even more in spite of reality.
