People on either fringe are generally intolerant of those whose opinions do not match their own.
A true liberal (not in the American sense of the word). Is somebody who lets others think and feel whatever they want and live however they want as long as it does no harm to others.
In the USA liberal gets conflated with left wing. IMO "progressives" or the left is as intolerant as any teabagger out there. They just sling shit at each other and don't think past their own prejudices.

Even with the best intentions, one can still get tripped up by these abstract terms, that mean something different to each and every body....

I get wrapped up in the British definition as that is my homeland. I carry some left and right wing opinions. I used to be a "progressive" But thankfully others opened up my eyes to see how wrong I was on many issues.
