So when you call in tomorrow, just tell them that you feel sick, and make a retching noise. They might even excuse you from the next day. But I hope you feel better.

We have one day/one trial in the county where I legally reside. I've been called twice...although not for a few years now. Anyway, whenever I was paneled, and interviewed, whether asked or not, I made sure that I pronounced loud and clear that I'm a social worker. "Well, y'know, as a SOCIAL WORKER this is how I tend to look at these sort of situations." It was pretty effective. I never got stuck for more than sitting there for one day.

I brought in my huge gilt-edged copy of War and Peace and lugged it into the courtroom.
The lawyers probably thought it was a Bible or I was an egghead if they realized it was Tolstoy. Plus I mentioned the OJ and Zimmerman case when they asked the question about a defendant not appearing on the witness stand.
I believe you will be thrown off because you are a social worker. Lawyers for both sides and the judge will be hesitant to have a potential jurer who is an expert in an area swaying other jurors in a forum that lacks any avenue to cross examine you. In other words they do not want third party experts influencing fellow jurors.

I think the lawyers and prosecutors want people that view them with a modicum of deference. If you demonstrate to them that you are their equal and not easily impressed they most likely will not want you on the jury. That was sort of my take...they sort of seemed like college professors who were wary of the intimidating students who could cause trouble. That was sort of the vibe I got. When you get dismissed it sort of seems like you were not up to snuff though.

When they ask you what beyond a reasonable doubt is, raise your hand and say "I cannot tell you what it is, but I know it when I see it." That should get you thrown off immediately.

Yeah, we can't have jurors paraphrasing Supreme Court justices.

How about going in with a sense of honesty and decency and a willingness to do your civic duty if they choose you?

Actually, I wouldn't mind serving on a jury. But, my life is really complicated right now.
That may sound lame, but its true.

I have no doubts about you Barbara. I hope your life becomes less complicated soon.
