addendum - to be clear as a bell, my comment, "Swift justice", was referencing the time it took from the publication of Sterling's odious remarks to the NBA acting in this matter. Make of it what you wish Don.
I wasn't actually referring to your statement, but to calls earlier from players for swift and decisive action by the Commissioner. I am still left with the cynical perception that this was less about justice than about the League's bottom line. It is bad business to be blatantly racist, but when more subtle forms of racism are profitable they are just business as usual. Bundy didn't know how to use the code words, and Sterling probably thought that he was in a situation where they weren't necessary, but veiled references to race are par for the course in politics and business.

Thanks for the clarification, I did read between the lines and wasn't seeing a charge of hypocrisy leveled my way. We're cool.

I still want to know the deal with the withdrawn NAACP award. I lost respect for them when their treasury was raided for a payoff for the head honcho's mistress.

Looks like the business world is speaking. Most corporate sponsors have dropped their support of the Clippers. This is a good thing, all cynicism aside, this is the consumers/fans wishes being expressed in a positive manner.
As I said in another thread, you are judged by who you associate with. No one wants the team or their fans hurt in this but free speech ain't exactly free. There are consequences to spouting hateful messages and shunning by fans and sponsors is entirely appropriate here.

I have to agree with that.

About the girlfri..uh... Business associate who recorded the conversation.

It's clear she set him up and I believe she is in litigation with his family... So there is every reason to suspect her motives. But, it's easier for me to set aside whatever her motives are for exposing this racism.

Maybe that brings my own ethics into question, I don't know.

I would say not cynical at all, more like realistic.

They are a huge organization and sh!t happens Steve. I believe it's an abberation and no reason to toss the baby with the bathwater. I'm a dues paying member of the NAACP and the ACLU and on balance I'll take the miniscule bad with the overwhelming good conducted by both organizations.

The ACLU's defense of the American Nazi Party's march through Skokie, Illinois had me scratching my head though...

All the more reason for vigilance and calling it out for what it is when confronted with it. I'll be voting my hard earned ducats when it comes dealing in the commercial sphere. That's freedom.

Dan, and I was trying so hard to be an iconoclast here.

The NBA is being self-serving, not 'outraged at the blatant racism.' The guy was set-up and remarks he never intended to be public became public. But it's definitely time for him to retire, and he won't miss the $2.5 mil.
