Frankly, I don't think is is necessary to pin any party affiliation on the guy. He appears to be largely apolitical as billionaires go. His $1000 political contributions were the equivalent of one of us dropping five bucks in the Salvation Army Bucket. I would assume that if he were a big GOP donor, some member of the fourth estate would have picked up on that (unless, of course he was donating to a super PAC). He is not a political figure, but just another rich a-hole who thinks he controls everyone around him.
There is clearly no comparison between his situation and Bundy's situation. Sterling denied making the comments, but even if he did make them, they were part of a surreptitiously recorded private conversation. In contrast, Bundy proudly pontificated on his opinions on racial issues - at a press conference. No Democrat has been holding Sterling up as a shining example of Democratic principles. The GOP was slobbering over Bundy's "patriotism."
The right wing's lame attempts at affiliating Sterling's comments with the Democrats are the most blatant example of a false equivalence.
