BTW, could this be the site from which grasshopper gets his inspiration for all of those insightful posts?

Can anyone tell me- are there any Republicans left who are not part of the fundamentalist movement in the United States? Or are they entirely one in the same now?

The two gals from Maine, and they're certainly considered heretics by their party. AFAIK, they're about the only "moderates" left in national politics. At the state level, it's a bit different. Mitch Daniels, the Governor of Indiana, seems to be a pragmatist.

Like fundamentalist Christianity, Conservatism has become a program of enforced stupidity.

Pat, Rob, how long have you guys lived in Maryland? Have you been there long enough to have known Mac Mathias? Mac got elected both to the House and Senate in a state with a 3 - 1 Democratic advantage in registered voters because he was a good man and cared about the people and the country. What the hell ever happened to Republicans like that? Or like Ev Dirksen?

John

Mathias was around during my high school and college years, so I remember him by name and reputation. What few Republicans are in Maryland seem to be knuckleheads (the former Gov. Ehrlich (who may run again) and Lt. Gov. Steele (of the RNC)) are examples of this. And my Congressman after the last redistricting, Roscoe Bartlett, would do South Carolina proud. The last moderate Republican of any stature was Connie Morella and she was defeated by Chris van Hollen (D).
