It's instinctive, I think, for us to care about how we are viewed by others. Of course, 'care about' is a pretty vague description for the wide variety of meanings we may find and reactions we can have.

OK, I'll unpack the reference to feedback loops there. I see one's choice of metaphors as both a result of how one views something, and an elaboration that, once created, reinforces such view, rendering it all the more habitual.
