Its a way of great way of addressing the main point, just not in a way that supports the conclusion of the original post. For example -
OP believes Rove, a Republican campaign strategist, is bad because he used "below the belt" tactics against Democrats.
Stephanie Cutter, a Democrat campaign strategist, produces a campaign add that accuses Romney of being implicit in the untimely death of a woman, and suggesting in an interview that Romney may have committed a felony. No comment from the OP so far decrying the these below the belt tactics as bad. The needle on the Hypoci-meter is pegged.
