Speedy Internet Access Is a Right, Not a Product for Sale

He's right, although I'd rather see him say this about Healthcare.

The White House issued one of its strongest statements on “net neutrality” Monday, saying federal regulators should write new rules that treat speedy Internet access as a right to an electronic public square where everyone has speedy service, not a commercial product parsed and priced according to different users and uses.

Internet providers are fucking us in the ass.

For many low-income Americans, Internet access is a luxury they can't afford.

Too bad they don't live in South Korea.

By the end of this year, South Koreans will have access to Internet speeds that are more than 200 times faster than what most Americans have, and they can have it for just $27 a month, or slightly more than half the average price Americans pay.

South Korea is among several countries where people can find speedier and cheaper Internet access than in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It's also a place where nearly everyone is online. More than 94 percent of South Koreans have high-speed connections -- compared with about 70 percent in the United States, according to the OECD.

I'm sure when the gov makes it mandatory that we buy data services, the prices will come way down.

Pretty much every country in the developed world has better and cheaper Internet and cell phone service than we do.

The cable companys are looking to compensate for their increasing loss of
tv subscribers with pricey internet service.

It's a duopoly for us. Either Comcast or AT&T and it's Comcast, one of the very worst service providers on the planet. AT&T can only do DSL which is very slow for our needs.

Let more service providers into the market to compete with Comcast and AT&T. In a town called Walnut Creek near us, there is an alternative to Comcast called Astound. Hope they expand into our area.
