President Acknowledges the Armenian Genocide

President Biden recognized the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire as a genocide Saturday, a designation that U.S. presidents long avoided for fear of damaging the U.S.-Turkey relationship.

The decision follows a lengthy lobbying campaign by members of Congress and Armenian American groups eager to see the White House use a term embraced by many scholars of early 20th century history.

“The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today,” Biden said in a statement. “Let us renew our shared resolve to prevent future atrocities from occurring anywhere in the world. And let us pursue healing and reconciliation for all the people of the world.”

Historians estimate that 1.5 million Armenians were killed in a campaign of forced marches and mass killings born out of Ottoman concerns that the Christian Armenian population would align with Russia during World War I, abetting an arch-nemesis of the Ottoman Turks. WP

No $hit is was GENOCIDE!

Turkey been playing U.S. for ever!

The ol Russia cold war scare for starters, then onto Islamic Fundamentalist Extremist and the biggie Iran......

With China moving into the picture in the neighborhood their hand is a strong one they feel. When other countries play the long game very effectively and we are lucky to have a six month to a year plan due to our seemingly perpetual election cycles.

The concept of genocide didn't exist until 1944 when it was defined by Polish lawyer Raphäel Lemkin (in reference to actions of the Axis powers) and wasn't codified as a breach of international law by the UN until 1948. If we want to reach backwards in time before then, we should probably include our own actions against Native Americans.

Actions against Native Americans that we apologized for in 2010, I recently learned. Congress included a carefully-worded apology in the Defense Apprepriations Bill that year. Of all places. Stops well short of mentioning genocide of course. Mentions killing of innocents by all sides.

We were pretty genocidal in the Phillipines during the Spanish-American War as well.

Good for President Biden.

Now we need to officially come clean on the genocide propagated by our own country.
