I flew there for 2 weeks in ~1984 from Munich when I lived nearby in Augsburg. I stayed for a week on the beach about 1/2 hour south of Mombasa and then spent a week in 3 game parks taking pictures of critters. At the beach, we went deep sea fishing several times and did lots of snorkeling on the coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.

The game parks were amazing, particularly the Masai Mara (the northern tip of the Serengeti). For example, we saw ~60 lions in our first afternoon and countless numbers of hoofed game. I'm glad I did it then. The dollar was strong and the whole trip including flights, ground transportation, lodging, food, safari guides, and all ancillary stuff was ~$900.

I picked up some awesome ebony wood carvings there and a bunch of very cool batiks. Maybe I'll snap a picture of my favorite carving and post it.

I was there too! But in 1983. I spent my time in the Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. Only one week, but it was a fantastic week. There is definitley something much more visceral about seeing the animals in the wild. Elephants, Giraffe (Didn't know they are so gracefull), Wildebeest, Lions, Hippos, Rhinos, Zebra...........
I got to see a Cheetah chase down a young Impala, the speed of that cat was just incredible. One of the greatest memories was waking up one morning, and sitting out on the front deck of my bungallo with a breathtaking view of Kilimanjaro emerging as the morning sun burned away the fog. The mountain is actually in Tanzania, so we couldn't go there, but we had a beautiful, unrestricted view from the Kenyan side.

I've been to Arkansas. Perhaps the most breathtaking thing I noticed is that those stupid Arkies still have dry counties!!!

You might not believe this, Chas, but the town I live in (Damascus, MD) is still dry. It's located in Montgomery County, MD, an upscale DC suburb and one of the wealthiest and most educated counties in the country. But I live in a small corner of it that's still trapped in the 1950's (for better or worse). We jokingly call it the West Virginia of Montgomery County.

Luckily, you only have to travel a couple of minutes in any direction to buy booze. Still, it seems like an anachronism for this area. The downside is that there are no good places to eat in Damascus, as beer/wine sales drive profits. Plus the teenagers now have to drive to find a place for someone to buy them beer.

Here's the nicest of the ebony carvings I picked up.
