Republicans will never agree to Federal control, and unless it's enforced at the Federal level it won't be enforced in states that hold gun rights to be sacrosanct and we'll have the same situation as we have now where mass shootings in California, New York, etc. will be done by perps that acquire their assault rifles & ammo in states with little or no enforcement of regulations.
I for one do not see any meaningful gun control/reform in our future. Any legislation at the national level will be fought tooth and nail by the NRA and its affiliates and will be watered down if it passes at all. Next as you have suggested, red states will refuse to enforce these laws at the local level. Outlaw assault weapons, chances are that they will easily be modified with aftermarket parts. Its a lose lose until we reach a breaking point with mass killings and even then some will point out that more people are killed driving their cars.

We had to drive into the city this morning. It was all over by the time we were going through downtown. They are saying it was a former employee. Two LMPD officers in hospital along with six others. Five DOA's one was the shooter.

The Governor knew two of the dead.

There was also another shooting a couple of hours later about a mile away leaving two dead. No connection with the first shooting they are reporting.

Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, said on Twitter that he and his wife, the former transportation secretary Elaine Chao, were “devastated” by the shooting. “We send our prayers to the victims, their families, and the city of Louisville as we await more information,” he said.
What the fuck, Mitch? Prayers...really?

It would be federal, though I can easily imagine regional processing centers. In any case, of course the current Republicans would die before they allowed anything like this. It's an idea for some future decade when the crazy Republicans have lost pretty much all support, and most likely been replaced by a new, rational right-wing party.

Nashville Metro Council voted to reinstate Justin Jones and he was sworn in though he will need to win a special election to go the full term. His partner in the protest Justin pearson is expected to be reinstated by Shelby County Commission. A Repub House member warned Jones to behave himself, so the knives are still out.

You get the license if a disinterested bureaucrat thinks the results show you are a reasonably steady and level-headed sort with no bad actions on record.

So we don't do invasive psych evals on everyone, just those who want a dangerous gun bad enough to go through one, and pay for it.

Buybacks, in stages, of all the dangerous guns out there. Get people used to the idea by first just going after the really scary-looking war-style guns.
I don't have a more workable solution to offer, but this sure sounds Elitist.

Like a poverty tax, or prove your financial worth just to vote. You're only represented in congress, or the legal system, if you have enough resources to be connected.

It just doesn't appeal to me. The Brat-Boy who got fired from his upper bank job, probably would have had his 'war weapon' legally, so even the money angle wouldn't stop mass shootings.

From all the reporting on local news the shooter up till yesterday morning was a good person. No warnings signs from the people who knew him.

Had a AR-15 style weapon, no surprises there...

It makes no sense.

He had a reasonably bright future, even if he did get fired from his job.

We can agree that our culture is sick, even if we don't believe it's part of God's plan (or more specificly a war between forces of Good vs. Evil).

I can make it a little less elitist. Let's say the fee is 1% of your adjusted gross income on your taxes last year. I'm still thinking about renewals, how often and how much....
