I had access to very graphic stuff even in the old pre-internet days. Holocaust, and graphic war stuff, like a Japanese soldier being burned to death by a flame thrower in a series of photos. Certainly with pervasive access nowadays the school curricula should start early in touching upon such things, just to enable young ones to handle it a bit, give them some understanding and context, and encourage them to seek emotional comforting when needed.
As for racial violence, I'd be very careful. Some young boys would just take targeting cues from such stories. Boys are often aggressive and hateful, that's all there is to it. Some aren't, and most grow out of it, more or less, but there it is.
The way school-age boys often are is so 'normal' to us we don't take in how bad it is, most of the time, but it's pretty bad.
