For example, I like nearly all the players on the NY Yankees (except ARod, of course), but I hate the friggin' Yankees (for no good reason other than I like the Orioles). Similarly, I hate the Braves because I like the Nationals.

I can't believe that you can't come up with a better reason than that for hating the Yankees.

I'll be going to the Nats/Cards game on Saturday, hoping my Nats will crush those no-account Cards.

Naah, they'll just get a six run lead and blow it.

Until the Nats lost to Miami on Tuesday, they had lost to no team other than the dreaded Braves thus far this season. That said, the Braves beat 'em like a redheaded stepchild for 5 out of 6 games. On paper, many sportswriters have said the Nats have the best team in baseball and will win the World Series. Many said the same thing last year, however.
I have to assume you saw that Nats/Cards NL playoff series in 2012. What a heartbreaker for us baseball-starved Washingtonians. BTW, I went to a grapefruit league game a couple of weeks back in Jupiter, FL between the Nats and Cards. Damned Redbirds won.

I've been a Cardinal fan since the 1964 Series. The next year my mom found out the radio station they were on and got me hooked on Harry Caray and Jack Buck. I spent a lot of 9V batteries on the Cards.

That's Chuk. Sadly, he died a couple of months back. He was 13-1/2. I miss him a lot.

Right smack in the middle of my forehead....... but I hide it under my blue Detroit Tigers baseball cap. (The "D" is for Democrat.)

So maybe that's why I don't get passionate about politics - I am not involved with sports, especially pro sports.

Sport can be entertaining when watching with someone knowledgeable. I can enjoy the show but neither organization is going to send me a check when it's over.
