The 300SL Gullwing was built like a race car. It had no air conditioning and was a very hot, as in heat, car to drive. You literally crawled into a tubular frame chassis. That is why there was a big hump to crawl over to get in. The 300SL Roadster was more civilized.
I had a chance to buy Don Tysons 300SL Gullwing in 1985 for $90,000. All original, never wrecked, and it had the original touring luggage. I could not come up with the money. I did take Romney's advice and asked my dad for the money. He just laughed. It was black enamel with a red leather interior and it drove like a truck.
