That will never happen in the US. Australia does not have a Second Amendment.

Sensible people down under. We should modify ours, at the least-scrap it at best. We are so ridden with gun toting knuckleheads that we need to change it. IMHO.

In Europe, they are repelled by depictions of gratuitous violence, whereas somehow we find nudity and sex repulsive. Go figure.

When the Soviet Union fell you could buy a beautifully made Czech folding stock AK-47 with two clips and a bayonet for $250. Add $100 for 5000 rounds of ammo and you were good to go. I don't remember that many mass killings in the 80's.
The culture of this county is the problem. We have the right wing media screaming 24 hours a day how we need to fear the government, unions, teachers, and anybody associated with government. These freaks are not arming themselves for personal protection they are stocking up on weapons to protect themselves from the government.
Mental illness is a convenient scapegoat. It is more than likely the environment the Newtown killer was raised in created a paranoid monster. There are other theories. Ever here of Lyme disease rage.
http://www.angelfire.com/biz/romarkaraoke/Lymerage.html
Is it a possibility that this mass murderer suffered from the effects of Lyme disease. The disease was named after a town in Connecticut after all.
Just like the Texas Tower shooter had a physical problem, affecting his brain, maybe this young man did too.
It is time to start paying attention to the people who exhibit signs of irrational behaviour. The problem is you have to be rich to get into any kind of mental healthcare facility today, and they are only there to pick the pockets of the well insured. The mental healthcare facilities, for the poor or middle class, are non-existent.
Mass killings are happening at an alarming rate. They happen so fast that one over shadows the other. Something is wrong with our society. It is time to get to the root of the problem and stop blaming everything but the problem.
I know I am rambling but, the problem is so complex, there is no easy answer. Banning assault weapons won't cure a damned thing. I am sure of that.

Europe is all around quieter. They have less gratuitous violence, less news channels, less advertising, less store signage, less politics in the public arena, less obnoxious car stereos, less fast food, etc.
It's peaceful. There's nothing quite like sitting at an outside pub in Europe and hearing nothing but people, bicycles, and church bells on the hour. It does wonders for the blood pressure, that's for sure.
Downtown of my home city in Germany:
Downtown of my home city in the States:
In the states we design our cities around cars and all that goes with that such as billboards, wide roads and narrow sidewalks, giant hot parking lots, dumpsters out back with garbage blowing around, etc.
Europeans on the other hand design their cities around people. Of course they were also lucky and had to do it simply because their cities were laid out before cars were invented.
