The US was lax. China was not only an economic competitor, but also a potential military adversary and it was obvious that many of her companies were in fact ran by or connected to her military.
Now the US is telling China that it is not going to be business as usual, especially since US has realized what MADE IN CHINA 2025 is. The US has made certain strategic sectors off limits to Chinese business. This has support from both sides of the aisles.
