It's okay, Pete. It is the Pavlovian response among conservatives to immediately assume that racism had nothing to do with this sort of situation. Just as so many Liberals assume it did. Whether it really did, or not. White man shoots black man, or vice versa............. "Ding, ding, ding.....(Time to slobber, doggies!)"
For me, the racism aspect is a sideline. It's not my primary concern. The SYG law and the refusal to offer any official explanation as to why there have been no charges filed is.

This dadgum horse is not only dead, but has been reduced to mush.
Even though we, as a society, have progressed in race relations, race remains an issue. We would not even know about this incident unless there was a racial factor involved. The information that has come out is at least suggestive that the shooter had engaged in some profiling. It also suggests that he overstepped his boundaries. Some of his version of events has come out, and its veracity will soon be tested.
The grand jury was supposed to have convened yesterday, so a group of people will be given the opportunity to hear the evidence that has been gathered and make an informed decision. That group will presumably have the opportunity to consider the plausibility of his story - unless he asserts his right not to testify. In that case, with no justification for an unquestioned homicide, there would seem to be no option but to issue an indictment.
Despite it's flaws, I have some faith in our judicial system. I will hope that the grand jurors are able to look at the evidence objectively.
Regards,
D-Ray

Your first sentence is absolutely the truth.
As far as the grand jury, I thought that had been decided against.

It has. As I understand it, the state AG said he/she refused (Paraphrased) "...to have the case forced into court by amateurs...".......

I was operating on old news, and what seemed like the most reasonable thing to do. Obviously the AG doesn't have faith in the system.

So, what happens without the grand jury? Zimmerman doesn't get charged with anything?

I strongly disagree Don.
I think the idea that someone can be singled out (for any reason), pursued and then killed because they "fought back" when they felt threatened would be just as news worth.
Honest, if a white man did this to a white kid it would still be national news if the man was not in jail.
Now is their added outrage because once again a young black was victimized? Well yes then, I agree.

I don't think this would ever happen now.
Without the uproar it likely would have though and therein lies much of the outrage.
