I just think responsible people have, or at least should have a right to own guns if they choose to do so, for the purpose of sport, (Hunting, target/skeet shooting, etc.) or personal/home protection. But, that there should be reasonable limitations. I don't think most sensible people would disagree with that basic premise.
I think we disagree with where the line should be drawn. I don't see why some feel that they must have weapons that were designed strictly for millitary use. Although SandyG did make a good argument that some folks
simply want them for collecting purposes and that they are expensive/ hard to obtain legally.
Anyhow, I think we had a good discussion going on this topic for a while.
Let's try to keep it that way................

Yeah, I don't need any of my "Salty Rifles"-I'll NEVER use them as they were intended-Or, let's hope I never HAVE to-But I just like them basically for the same reason I like Boatanchors-"Mil-Spec" stuff is usually a couple of grades ahead of even the best "consumer-grade" items. I like the "Over-engineered to the max" aspect of 'em, & its also neat for me, personally, to have a piece of history in my hands. Uzis ? An Israeli gun that may have been instrumental in saving Israel's collective butt several times. An innovative design, as well. FALs ? The Free World's Right Arm-Used by something like 90 countries at one time or another as their main battle rifle. There are 2 basic versions, metric & inch, which are identical, yet are largely NOT interchangable. They are also one of the most physically attractive battle rifles ever made. The AK47- The Big Kahuna, the Mac Daddy, more of them have been made/sold/given away than any other rifle. They even have been chambered in Western calibers, altho the original Combloc caliber 7.62 X 39 MM is easily available. They aren't pretty, & they're kinda crude, but an AK will almost always go "Bang !", no matter what happens to it. I dunno, I just really LIKE this stuff. I could bore y'all for quite awhile on the history of these things...Shooting them is almost a minor consideration to me....My real interest is more of historical and/"gearhead" perspective...

Probably costs a lot more than collecting stamps or coins. Sounds like you have a real appreciation for history. Do you keep those treasures locked up?
I don't see any suggestion that your reason for having the collection is to make you feel more secure in your home. I just would hate for people to have a false sense of security by having handguns at home when it may or may not be that the possession of handguns puts them at greater risk of being shot. That is an issue I would still like to see the facts and figures on.
Regards,
D-Ray

Oh, yeah...I have +/- 125 loudenboomers, & they stay locked up. The ammo isn't even in the same part of the house as the guns are, I'd either be over my "mad" or dead by the time I got to it & loaded one of 'em up.The "security" aspect of it for me is quite low-they're in another room from our bedroom, & I'm honestly not very worried about crime here. I go off during the day, & rarely bother to lock my house, unless I'm gonna be gone more than an hour or so. But I guess I COULD "bluff" someone-Would YOU really wanna argue w/a guy who's stickin' an Uzi in yr face ?!? Never mind it don't have a clip in it...(grin)

Hunting, OK. Self protection, I doubt a case can be made objectively.

Re-read the post. He thought I reaching for my wallet. When I pushed my coat back the .38 (in a paddle holster on my hip) was exposed.

Here is something my sister (a long time Texan) sent to me. I thought some might like it.
Gun Wisdom
Clint Smith, Director of Thunder Ranch, is part drill instructor, and part stand up comic.
Here are a few of his observation on tactics, firearms, self defense and life as we know it in the civilized world.
"The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight....I'd choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead."
"The two most important rules in a gunfight are: always cheat and always win."
"Every time I teach a class, I discover I don't know something."
"Don't forget, incoming fire has the right of way."
"Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, cause it's going to be empty.."
"If you're not shootin', you should be loadin'. If you're not loadin, you should be movin', if you're not movin', someone's gonna cut your head off and put it on a stick."
"When you reload in low light encounters, don't put your flashlight in your back pocket. If you light yourself up, you'll look like an angel or the tooth fairy and you're gonna be one of 'em pretty soon."
"Do something. It may be wrong, but do something."
"Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghilliesuit."
"Shoot what's available, as long as it's available, until something else becomes available."
"If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for."
"Don't shoot fast, shoot good."
"You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or use any other word you think will work but I've found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much the universal language."
"You have the rest of your life to solve your problems. How long you live depends on how well you do it."
"You cannot save the planet. You may be able to save yourself and your family."
"Thunder Ranch will be here as long as you'll have us or until someone makes us go away and either way it will be exciting."
And More Excellent Gun Wisdom....... The purpose of fighting is to Win. There is no possible victory in defense.
The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.
The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.
1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to Fight, he'll just kill you.
2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.
4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.
5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'
6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.
7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble? ' 'No ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'
8. Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!?
If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, please forward.
'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' - G. K. Chesterton
A people that values its privileges above its principles will soon lose both.
"Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not." - Thomas Jefferson

I think I see the light.
I was in the Quickcheck parking lot this morning and a car in front of me came to a complete stop in the two way traffic lane right next to the entrance. I figured they were dropping someone off but nope they just parked. I had to back up and drive around the car. As I was the driver was giving me a stair down??????
I asked what his problem was and well his girlfriend jumped in between.
So now I am thinking' of this thread and how if he had a gun or I did we could have settled this properly.
Yep, I am sure if one of us had a gun we could have bullied the other.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot we had a lock down yesterday at all the district schools after a teacher was notified that the bathroom had a threat stating that guns would be brought to school written on the wall.
As every family has an arsenal at home it was taken seriously. I know the proper thing to do is to have all the kids bring in one today for "protection" but that was not suggested.
