Oh right, left on their own with no regulation by government, capitalistic corporations will be municifent patrons toward their employees. Ever live in a company town? Where I grew up there were four villages/towns divided west from east by the river and north from south by the CNR tracks. Well the southwest village was a company town. The company owned the houses and just about everything else. If the works manager drove a Buick you were restricted to Oldsmobile and below, very rigid pecking order.

We have had a few company towns in Maryland's history, none were very pretty. It was unions and government regulation that eventually put an end to them.

Seems to me that all you right wing folks think that unfettered greed has somehow disappeared from the face of the earth. Well make sure you are sitting down and have your seatbelt fastened - it has not disappeared, it is alive and well and living in Boardrooms across America.

Oh right, in Confederate times there was no Federal Government, we had bodily slavery in the south, economic slavery in the north's mill towns. We had bond servants and a landed gentry - they were the only ones to vote.

We spent one Christmas in Williamsburg, VA, took all the guided tours, etc. At first we thought it was terrible where the slaves lived, poor housing, dirt floors, only the fireplace for heat. Then we saw the houses of the white farm workers - exactly the same.

Sometimes I think we should shut down Hollywood, they have romanticized our history until it is no longer recognizeable. Are you aware that if you failed to attend church service and were not flat on you back in bed with a fever when the beadle called around you could spend a few days in the stocks - summer or winter?

Sure you could pack up the family and go to the western frontier and claim forty acres that had been stolen from the native peoples. Build a sod hut and farm the land, a truly idyllic existence. Now the folks whose land you were camped on might get a little pissed off and kill you off, but hey you were on your way to the top.
