Didn't you ever stop and wonder why they were always hitchhiking?

I had a '68 Beetle that was a gas in the snow; a '69 bus that moved me to college and back a couple of times (with a new engine in the interim); and a '76 Rabbit that got great gas mileage until the tranny decided not to work any more. Not in the market for one now-days.

D-Ray

I had a '62 transporter when I was a kid...couldn't keep a motor in it.

Course, I drove it like I was Sterling Moss. You can actually drift one through a corner, provided you do it fast enough that the rear axle doesn't fold under.

Wife had a 70 something Super Beetle...I don't even want to talk about that thing. Wasn't no drifting it through a corner, mainly because you couldn't keep it running long enough to get it out of the drive.

The '68 Beetle had simplicity on its side. No AC, four-speed manual. They tried to make the Superbeetle more like a car. The engine on the bus was my stupid fault. I had just got it and didn't realize the oil light didn't work. Drove it half way from Tulsa to Norman with no oil - well almost made it half-way - maybe 50 miles. Tough way to learn to check the oil on my own. Bought it from my brother and never told him I blew the engine.

Regards,

D-Ray

Wife's Super Beetle had a semi-automatic transmission in it...a really weird affair which combined a three speed manual, a torque converter, and a clutch. Only thing I've ever seen like it was the tranny in a '53 Desoto, and it was actually laid out better.

Everyone talks about how smart the Germans are, but I wonder. We stole their aerospace engineering and improved it, and they stole our '50s cira MOPAR engineering and made it more complicated than it needed to be.

Oh well, thing I'll take a shower in a few minutes, put on all of the clothes that I own, then go install that damned vacuum actuator.

Come to think of it, maybe we're not so smart either. GM stole the worse part of the reverse engineered V-Dub tranny, made it even more complicated, then installed it on the Blazer.

I'm sure you already know this, but those plastic tipped timing gears are bad about causing your motor to jump time when they get bad enough. I'm sure your 302 is an interference mill like a GM 350, and I've had a couple of them get really screwed up when they jumped time. Generally bend half of the pushrods, sometimes half of the valves.

I've been told, and also experienced the oil pickup tube on a 302 having the screen get plugged up. If all you have is one idiot light (one idiot, one idiot light per the FoMoCo engineering dep't) like my 80 model LTD had, you might want to install a set of gauges. Might save you from cooking the motor by assuming that you had a faulty water temp sensor like I did.

Good luck and watch out for uninsured drivers!!!

Chas
Thanks for the advice. I've been debating a gauge set for a while now, but haven't figured out where exactly to put it. Once upon a time they made A pillar gauge pods for 80s full size Fords, I keep hoping I'll bump into one.

Even if the engine doesn't toast from interference, if it actually strips the teeth there can be big problems with the plastic bits clogging things up later. I had this happen on an 79 Olds Custom Cruiser with a 350 I owned long ago.

Lack of funds has made me an ambitious man It's an interesting learning experience though. What's JAN rated?

It's amazing, isn't it? Sometimes I think I've got 3 loads on. Is it done yet?

D, a friend of mine had an old bug back when I was still in school. Clutch cable was broken, he had a pair of vise grips on the end and pulled it

Never ran GREAT, but he always got it started.

JAN= Joint Army Navy. A vacuum tube designed for the military, supposedly a more robust version than the civilian models. Most likely an RCA version of the $500 hammer.

Ain't made it out there yet, but that's next on the plate.

Vice grips are wonderous things, had a set I used for an accelerator on my '66 Chev van. Had a buddy who's throttle broke on his murdercycle, he threaded the cable through a spray attachment for a garden hose, taped it to the handle bars, and drove it like that.

A braver soul than I.

Good luck with your Lincoln, but I suspect that it's more than a lack of funds. I think you really enjoy pulling a wrench.

Right, nothing quite like lying on your back bleeding brake lines at 5 degrees.
