'GOP Senator Pushes False Epstein Claim Even After Jake Tapper Corrects Him in Wild CNN Interview'
"A Republican senator repeatedly pushed a false claim about the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein — even after Jake Tapper corrected him in a wild CNN interview.
During a contentious back-and-forth on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) insisted that former President Barack Obama’s administration was responsible for striking a “sweetheart” plea deal with the disgraced financier in 2009.
“Remember, there was a plea deal that was struck in 2009, way before I was in office, way before [President Donald] Trump was even considering to be in office, way before [Attorney General] Pam Bondi was in his office, way before Kash Patel was [FBI] director — 2009, there was a sweetheart plea deal that was made underneath the Obama administration with Epstein,” Mullin said. “And that sweetheart has not been exposed.”
But as Tapper immediately pointed out, Mullin’s timeline was completely wrong.
“It was 2008,” Tapper said. “The U.S. attorney at the time was a guy named Alex Acosta. He was a Bush appointee. He went on to become President Trump’s secretary of labor. It all took place in 2008.”
Indeed, Epstein reported to prison in June 2008 — six months before Obama was inaugurated. But Mullin kept insisting that it was the Obama administration which was responsible for the light sentence.
“Who was in office at the time?” Mullin asked.
“George W. Bush,” Tapper said.
“Who was in office at the time?” Mullin repeated.
“George W. Bush,” Tapper shot back.
“No, 2009 is when the case came out,” Mullin said. “And Obama was in office at the time.”
“It’s not true,” Tapper said simply.
