Schumer knows not to mix personality issues with strategic oversight. He knows Trump is clad in such as Manifest Destiny and Monroe Doctrine. He has listened to Marco Rubio and has an understanding of where Trump is going. He trusts Trump in the Middle East.

So there are commonalities of interest.
