His pick for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, has already called Trump’s oft-threatened tariffs a mere “bargaining chip” to start negotiations. “When you’re running for office, you make broad statements so people understand you,” Lutnick told CNBC. And Trump, after a campaign of China-bashing, is back to exalting Xi Jinping. “He’s an amazing guy,” Trump said of the Chinese dictator. “The press hates when I say that, but he’s an amazing person.”

Now Trump seems to be echoing his puppeteer Musk after all.
