or because we've got instincts finely honed to keep us alive when we were a band of 50 hunters and gatherers, but the results are absurd when projected through a nation-state of millions?

There is a study, not recalling completely the details at this moment.

The jest was a small group of people IIRC around 50 or less. They got along and cooperated well together. Had to work for the common good.
Increasing the group quickly devolved into tribal competitiveness. Jockeying for control over the rest.

The last paragraph from the link:
"Even during war, Ari, they go to their point of major fanaticism, which is climate change," she said. "That's what Americans should be uniting around - not Israel's survival".

If there is any country in the Middle East that is assured survivability in terms of war that country certainly would be Israel...Israel is the only nuclear power in the area.

They love the notion of restoring Jerusalem to fulfill biblical requirement for the second coming, but otherwise traditionally despise Jews because they won't convert, and if they do they aren't "real" Christians because their ancestors killed Christ.
