OPINION: A memo to national media - Brian Kemp is no moderate savior

"There seems to be a thought among national pundits that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp could be the superhero they’re looking for to swoop into the 2024 GOP presidential field and defeat Donald Trump.

At the moment, Trump seems destined to win the GOP nomination, but appears incapable of winning the White House again, so who could blame Republicans for looking for someone to save the day?

"Apart from the fact that about half of Republicans don’t think they need to be saved from Trump, there are two reasons why Kemp won’t play the moderate savior some are looking for. The first is the simple fact that Kemp is not running for president. Not only has he never campaigned in Iowa, he has never been to Iowa or New Hampshire as governor. That is not the itinerary of a man looking to run for the White House in six months.

That lack of early-state travel could be solved with some fancy scheduling. But an underlying piece of the draft-Kemp calculus seems to be an assumption, or maybe even a hope among news analysts outside of Georgia, that Kemp’s moderate tone and demeanor in public mean he is also moderate in his politics.

But they should know that the Georgia governor is nobody’s moderate. He’s not even close." by Patricia Murphy

The only credible moderate they have is Romney and he is branded as a RINO by the MAGAts and Repugnants. I just don't see anyone taking the shine off a third Trump candidacy and I am guessing Nikki will be his VP runningmate.

The MAGA infestation is nearly complete. There is no other candidate MAGA enough for the cult. Other Repub politicians are afraid of the MAGA cult turning on them. The MAGA cult will still vote for tRump even if he's convicted of any or all charges and imprisoned. Their hope, as is his, will be that he can clear himself if elected. Their hope is that the train can make it to the other side.

Yep. There are people dumb enough to believe that its Trump's policies that are attractive to MAGA. It's not his policies, it's his performance. They love that he breaks the rules of civil society, thereby giving them license to be as big of assholes as they want too. Plus they find him funny/entertaining. His rally-goers aren't really much different from deadheads who traipsed the country following Jerry and the boys from concert to concert.

Correct. Just check the voting records in Congress. Romney voted for Trump approved bills and measures 80% of the time...more than his fellow Utah colleague Mike Lee. Cheney a similar number. Kinzinger over 90%, for christ's sake. Kemp used his authority as Secretary of State, racially motivated voter suppression, to queer the 2018 Ga. governor's election and beat Stacy Abrams. Kemp is scum...he's some sort of hero because he won't say the 2020 election was rigged? The election that made him governor of Georgia was fucking rigged.

They're all scum. If they're not MAGA, they're looking the other way to stay in office. It's so rare that a bill they vote for is something that is even minimally acceptable to me. But then according to some around here, I'm an extremist. Perhaps. I haven't voted for any Republican candidate for any office since Vietnam...probably since before Vietnam.

One last thing. In November 1968 the ignorant electorate in this country put Richard Nixon in the White House. A criminal who had committed treason days prior to the '68 Presidential election. During wartime, in late October 1968, Nixon successfully interfered in the Paris peace talks because he believed it gave him a better chance in the election. Everybody knew it. LBJ and Republican Senator Everett Dirksen discussed it in a recorded phone conversation...

LBJ, "This is treason, Everett."
Dirksen, "I know."

Nobody did a goddamn thing because to do anything about it would have required disclosure that the Vietnam embassy in DC (our ally) was bugged by the CIA. If the peace talks had generated a cease fire in late 1968, which looked like a possibility before Nixon's treason, US deaths would have ended at 36,000. And Nixon? Quit, but ever impeached, and pardoned for any possible past criminal behavior (including his treason for which he should have been hanged for the deaths of another 22,000+ US personnel in Vietnam) in a backroom deal with Gerald Ford for the office of President of the United States.

Doesn't appear to me that the country has actually changed all that much with the emergence of MAGA.

MAGA didn't just materialize out of nowhere.
