Why No Amount of Evidence Will Make Republicans Admit Trump’s Guilt

A reasonably healthy party might give its indicted leader some benefit of the doubt, while calling for judgment to be withheld before he has his day in court. But Republicans correctly understand that their party will consider Trump an innocent martyr regardless. The sickness of the Republican Party as it is presently constituted is that there is no conceivable set of facts that would permit it to acknowledge Trump’s guilt.

What has brought the party to this point is the convergence of its decades-long descent into paranoia with its idiosyncratic embrace of a career criminal.

Without belaboring the point, consider each of these dynamics in turn. The Republican Party’s internal culture has been shaped by what Richard Hofstadter famously described as “the paranoid style” in American politics. Hofstadter specifically attributed this description to the conservative movement, which, at the time, was a marginalized faction on the far right but has since completely taken control of the party and imposed its warped mentality on half of America. To its adherents, every incremental expansion of the welfare state is incipient communism, each new expansion of social liberalism the final death blow to family and church. Lurking behind these endless defeats, they discern a vast plot by shadowy elites.

Barr: Presenting Trump as victim after indictment is ‘ridiculous’

Thanks for finally taking off the politician’s hat, Billy.

Jonathan Chait's article you quote explains exactly why when vote fraud is actually done, it is Republicans doing it.

This is why things could get "interesting" after the 2024 election should the Repukes get swept from the positions of power they have now. They know if they lose what they have now it's going to be a long, long time before they get it back. As I've said before, they won't go down without a fight.

That's too generous. Repubs like to have an underclass that they feel superior to, while giving favorable treatment to the wealthy which they aspire to be.

This article describes Whell to a T.
This article describes your version of "whell" to a T. It reflects the left's version of what they believe most of the right believes. It has less than zero bearing on reality.

Look, let me make this real simple for you Finn, because you're either unable to, or unwilling to, understand this.

- Starting even before Loretta Lynch and Jim Comey, the Justice Department's and the FBI's credibility has dropped significantly. It's not just me saying that, it is not just about the FBI's/Justice's handling of the "collusion" allegations. They've mishandled a number of major, newsworthy recent cases. Their role in the Larry Nassar investigation was a massive fail. The FBI has been warned or tipped off to numerous mass shooters including but not limited to the 2009 Fort Hood shooter, the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooter, and the 2018 Parkland school shooter. They were also warned about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers. After 9/11, it was revealed that two of the hijackers actually lived with an FBI informant in 2000.

- The FBI had advance warnings that Jeffrey Epstein was sexually abusing underage girls, along with his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell. Even after Epstein copped a plea on a light sentence in 2006, the FBI ignored additional ongoing reports of sexual abuse of minors.

- Remember Richard Jewell? The FBI ruined the guy's life by leaking to the media that he fit the "profile" of the bomber, along with all the other shenanigans that the FBI perpetrated in the process to basically set Jewell up with a number of those strategic decisions traceable right back to Louis Freh.

- One of the most egregious examples of the lack of professionalism and integrity was the farce Comey press conference regarding the Clinton server. During that fiasco, for which we learned that "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring charges - it was revealed that classified and top-secret documents were in the possession of the Secretary of State in her home. We also learned that some of those classified documents ended up on the laptop of convicted felon Anthony Weiner.

There have been many more. Not to mention both the IG and Durham report that went into chapter and verse about the failures of the Crossfire Hurricane team.

- The FBI and Justice also have a recent history of - to put it mildly - a lack of perspective or proportion. The FBI took little interest in the 2020 riots that occurred in the US. But when NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace thought he saw a noose in his NASCAR-assigned garage and declared himself a victim of a hate crime, the FBI showed up in force, only to find out that no hate crime occurred. And, of course, it takes the full weight of the FBI and Justice Dept to crack down on angry parents at school board meetings.

So, please forgive me and many others if - like a grade school teacher teaching multiplication and division - we'd like the FBI and Justice Department to show their work before taking their statements and leaks at face value.

Because it is made up of human beings, the FBI is not perfect. That said, your choice of believing Trump over the DOJ/FBI is laughable, as was your recent assertion that the GOP would abandon Trump if the indictment showed that he indeed stole some of our nation's most closely guarded secrets, shared them with uncleared individuals and obstructed their recovery. Indeed, Trump's standing with the base has improved after his treachery was publicly revealed.

YOU stated I "believe Trump" on this. I never did. Questioning the FBI and its shakey history is not the equivalent of believing Trump (though you make that accusation because you think you score cheap debate points by doing so). And your suggestion of human error by the FBI grossly understates the frequency and severity of the FBI's recent notable missteps.

I did actively criticize the Mar a Lago raid. There's no question that there's a very significant difference between how Justice/FBI is approaching Biden's stray documents versus Trump. For example, there's been all manner of leaks - some factually wrong - about what was found at Mar a Lago. No similar leaks have been made about Biden's documents. And there was no armed raid on the University of Delaware. We found out the FBI conducted a search there via a leak from an "un-named source".

But, I'm in favor of letting the prosecutor make his case in court, and we'll find out whether or not Trump "stole some of our nation's most closely guarded secrets, shared them with uncleared individuals and obstructed their recovery."

If they were not stolen, how did the documents wind up in Mar-a-Lago. And let's say that they got accidentally mixed up with his personal belongings and got transported to MAL, why weren't they promptly returned, better yet reported as in the case of Biden & Pence? Furthermore, why weren't the documents returned to National Archilve returned promptly returned when they asked for it. Why did it take a request, then a subpoena and finally a search warrant for the retrieval of said documents. Why did the documents wind up in his NJ home?

Quote:
According to the federal indictment, Trump said on August 18, 2016: "In my administration, I'm going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. No one will be above the law."

Less than a month later, on September 6, he followed up by saying: "We can't have someone in the Oval Office who doesn't understand the meaning of the word confidential or classified."
And you blame the FBI, not the crook. Wonder why, and it a rhetorical question.

I do not have high expectations of Trump ever getting convicted for his crimes, but this one is going to be very public. If Todie Cannon runs interference, her rulings can and will be appealed to the 11th Circuit Court. Wonder why the despicable SOB cannot even get a lawyer to represent him especially he has bundles of OPM to pay out. Wat is sad is that a so called multi billionaire is fleecing his supporters who are not exactly swimming in the dough like he claims he does.

Poor Whell. He’s never going to stop fighting for his Dear Leader, no matter how stupid it makes him look. Cults are like that. Sad!
