Assault weapon ban clears WA state Senate
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle...-state-senate/

A very sensible law. Repubes, of course, voted against it. Thankfully, they are in the minority in WA.

Of course there aren't. I know a sick fucking culture when I see one.

I'm suggesting there's no practical way to do it. Mental health evaluations aren't Carnac the Magnificent holding an envelope to his head.
There's no way to predict when the next frustrated asshole with a gun is going to walk into a bank and murder his former co-workers. The "mental health thing" as American conjobs put it, is a strategic bullshit canard. The only way to do it is the way the Brits decided to do it...and the way the Swedes decided to do it...and the way the Japanese decided to do it...etc., etc., etc. Nobody's semi-automatic war weapons are grandfathered in. Possession is illegal.

The mental health angle is pure adulterated deflection by (many) Republicans.

When machine guns became a serious issue in the early 1930's the National Firearms Act was passed. The following link outlines the basic restrictions on those weapons. https://www.cga.ct.gov/2009/rpt/2009-R-0020.htm

The NFA is likely to be the template for a similar law for assault weapons.

The Sandy Hook School massacre happened on December 14, 2012. At a Tilton, NH town hall. April 30th, 2013, four months later NH Senator Kelly Ayotte spewed her scripted right wing "criminals and mentally ill" bullshit. Causing Erica Lafferty, daughter of murdered Sandy Hook Principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung to walk out in disgust.

Sandy Hook shooting victim's daughter walks out on Ayotte town hall

Nothing has changed since Sandy Hook.

Ayotte found her ass booted out of the US Senate in the 2016 election.

The manufacturer of a 60 round drum is being sued, because it was used a mass shooting.

Looks like the class action might succeed.

Makes one wonder how many folks are buying high capacity semi automatic firearms based on the mis-representation in both the media and on the political floor. Think it was about thirty years back when the ten round magazine passed the local sleepy small town gun store I frequented was overrun with people grabbing every high capacity anything they could get their hands on.
Range officers have their hands full these days with outright dangerous gun handling from those who have never considered a safety course, although locally now the range requires one before being allowed on the firing line alone.
I guess my concern centers around ban enforcement if and when such legislation is passed. Just cannot see our local sheriff going door to door with a search warrant and locking up non compliant individuals. It imho is not a democrat/republican thing, it is a decline in societal values thing, and that is hard to overcome no matter what rules are passed.
In the early 60's was taught firearms safety at a very young age, probably way out of correctness today btw. The threat of at the least a severe tongue lashing or worse made quite an impression on a young mind. A national requirement to pass a firearms course before permitting to own would be a first step I certainly would support.

These bills ban the sale of assault weapons, they don't prohibit existing ownership.

No one who already owns an assault weapon would have to turn it in.

I'm not sure that the ban of fully auto weapons to slow gangsters in the 30's applies to current mentally ill, social media damaged, or whatever. Don't think you saw Al Capone shooting up school kids.

Alt-right bullshit. Most of the mass shooters have nothing in their official criminal or medical/mental health records that would have prevented them from buying the weaponry they used. From 1966 to 2019, 77% of mass shooters purchased weapons used in the shootings legally.

Your "current mentally ill, social media damaged, or whatever" is not what this is about. What it's about is the availability, to just about anybody, of legal semi-automatic war weapons that will empty a 30 round magazine into a classroom full of six year olds in less than nine seconds. Less than six seconds with a bump stock. Less than four seconds with a converted formerly legal AR-15...and it can be done.
