Which is no different from what we are facing now with the GOP. Nothing matters but re-election. When taking a position on something threatens a politician's performance in the next primary season, whether it's firearms or supporting a sociopathic grifter criminal ex-president, you can bet that politician will pander to the segment of the electorate that betters the chance of re-election. We expect this on relatively benign issues because we're all flawed humans...the politicians and the voters. But when it comes to sedition or this country's democratized gun carnage, it's time to suck it up and do it right.
Over my lifetime so far, I've walked away from several jobs that provided considerable financial security because the business practices and the employment practices there were offensive. What we have seen in the GOP since the election of Obama and with the election of Trump only confirms what we knew about Republican politicians starting way back during the Vietnam War, further confirmed during the Reagan years when rural and suburban American voters decided to go en masse with the racist, sexist, bigot party. We expect the GOP to fight any gun control anywhere tooth and nail. Democrat politicians are the problem with guns. Expecting politicians to do what's right is a fucking fools errand.
Every EU nation has decided that there's no reason for civilians to have access to weapons of war. Along with that, they have set rigorous requirements for licensure and possession of any firearm. Because the European people recognize that liberty and license are different and necessary things. We don't have the liberty to drive a car or own a gun...we apply for the license. So now, for example, the firearms homicide rate the this country is 40 times the rate in the UK. 40 FUCKING TIMES. And the restrictions in the UK are moderate compared with most EU countries.
America's democratized gun carnage is on the hands of American voters, but there is a flaw in the American culture. And what we see going on now in the attacks on the democratic process, likely a fatal flaw. When the anit-Vietnam War noise became big enough, the politicians finally responded, but when the war ended, a majority of Americans were still not anti-Vietnam war.
The American people will not demand that anything but long barreled hunting rifles be outlawed. If they did, we would have a ban in a year.
Being a realist at heart, I contend that we are a sick fucking culture.
