I don't think that kind of sniping will be helpful in finding common ground ...

Dood. It's not the New Yorker that was new to me. I never bothered with their satire section.

I've been aware of the New Yorker ever since Jr. High English class in 1969. Or as you kids call it nowadays, "middle school".

The nice thing about a "no holds barred" site is that everyone gets to show us, in their own words, their true mettle. On another site, I member really went "over the top on one of my honestly reasonable posts. He was so nose deep in the bubble that it was like I was from another world, and this was his response:

Quote:
How about you just go to stormfront instead of littering this site with your pathetic, transparent ultra right wing nonsense. You’ve got a real David Koresh meets Wally George vibe. You try to inject your agenda on this forum every chance you get. Your posts across the net on other forums clearly show who you are, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the FBI and IRS have files on you. Yes, you are an outlier to society who shows over and over that you have zero compassion and no sense of being civic minded. Your gaslighting attempt of ‘aww shucks, who me?’ Is especially weak and embarrassing here. And guess what- your arsenal isn’t gonna protect you from your so-called tyranny. Might wanna study up on David Koresh.
And what drove him over the edge? I simply said that everything the government compels us to do, they do via the power of the gun. It's a simple concept that any student of government understands. But to this guy, well, his words speak for themselves. The challenge of the internet is that everyone is an expert, no matter how old or young they are, no matter their depth of knowledge or experience. And sometimes to grossly different experience/knowlege/wisdom levels clash, and Dunning Kruger* exposes itself for everyone to see. It happens here a lot too.

*to be fair, we all suffer from this in one area or another. Thoughtful and reasonable people will seek out their own digression into it on a subject at hand.

Finding common ground only works with those who wish to do so.

Confucius say: Boat with one oar in water only goes in circles. No matter who rows it.

Actually, as NI points out in his post above, these forums compel us to reveal who we really are, whether we like it or not. I often find in discussing politics, that if I make the first effort to meet my opponent in the middle, we can reach an accommodation if they have any shred of reasonableness in their soul.

If pressed, I will describe myself as a liberal, but that doesn't mean I don't have certain conservative sensibilities, and I imagine many people are like that. What vexes me is people who won't listen to a single word from the opposition and just stick their fingers in their ears and recite their talking points. Plenty of 'em on either side.

Of course, as you point out, some people just can't be reached.

The forums invite us to reveal who we really are, but they are most often a way for people to reveal how the think of themselves, and/or how they wish to appear to others. And you do run into some who's presentation departs markedly from reality.

Bold Headline

Link to probably paywalled article.

Insult to a person or group.

Biden backs filibuster exception to protect abortion access

Good idea, Joe. Now please also support an exception to allow this radical far-Reich-wing SCOTUS to be packed with more reasonable justices. Thanks!
