Why the surge in racist misinformation about Kamala Harris is so worrisome
Some conservative assholes were quick to spread conspiracy theories when Joe Biden announced his VP pick.

Within hours of Joe Biden announcing that he had selected Kamala Harris as his presidential running mate, conspiracy theories as well as racist and sexist misinformation about her proliferated online. Much of this harassing dialogue recycled or built on earlier false claims spread about Harris. And the actions social media has already taken — or avoided — are stoking anxieties about the role of misinformation in the campaign to come.

On QAnon and other right-wing Facebook pages, memes compared Harris to Rachel Dolezal and wrongly claimed she was not African American. On Twitter, a post with 20,000 “likes” pointed out that Harris’s sister takes hydroxychloroquine, without the context that she uses the medication for lupus, not Covid-19. And countless posts questioned her eligibility to run for vice president, a problem that was exacerbated by a controversial Newsweek op-ed pushing the same baseless question. On Thursday, President* Trump, who infamously promoted the racist birther conspiracy theory about President Barack Obama, amplified the claims about Harris’s eligibility.

Harris is going to tear Pence a new asshole in their debate, just like she tore John Cornyn a new asshole on the Senate Floor. And I can't wait to see it. The only thing that might have made me happier to see Trump embarrass himself in a debate against Biden without his notes or his teleprompters that he can't read properly...would have been to see Rahm Emanuel or Andrew Cuomo (IMHO the two best candidates the Democrats could have produced) tear him a new asshole in the presidential debate. But both those guys are too smart to want that fucking job.

Newsweek apologizes for Kamala Harris op-ed

The decision to publish the op-ed sparked swift backlash, with critics claiming the magazine had opted to spread a racist “birther” theory similar to the one President Trump leveled against former President Obama for years.

"This op-ed is being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia. We apologize," Josh Hammer, Newsweek’s opinion editor, and Nancy Cooper, its global editor-in-chief, wrote in the note attached to the op-ed on Friday.

"The essay, by John Eastman, was intended to explore a minority legal argument about the definition of who is a natural-born citizen' in the United States. But to many readers, the essay inevitably conveyed the ugly message that Senator Kamala Harris, a woman of color and the child of immigrants, was somehow not truly American," they continued.

“The op-ed was never intended to spark or to take part in the racist lie of Birtherism, the conspiracy theory aimed at delegitimizing Barack Obama, but we should have recognized the potential, even probability, that that could happen,” they added. “All of us at Newsweek are horrified that this op-ed gave rise to a wave of vile Birtherism directed at Senator Harris.”

Harris was born in Oakland. It doesn't matter where her parents were from or what their resident status was. On the day Harris was born in Oakland, she was a natural born American citizen and eligible for the Presidency. It doesn't matter if her parents were undocumented. She was fucking born here.
