I read 80% of the thread, really enjoyed the foray into nuclear power. That said, I have a personal theory:
Americans aren't dumb, we're lazy (post WWII). And when we don't get what we want due to it? It's easier to blame someone else. Typically, they're brown/black skinned and languishing in poverty.
