I have to say that, although I am adamantly against forbidding the construction of the Islamic Center near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, I completely agree with the sentiments expressed by Ms. Raza and her organization. I hope Imam Rauf sees the error of his intentions and heeds this sane advice from his Muslim brothers and sisters.

That being said, should Imam Rauf refuse to reconsider his decision and proceeds with the Center there should be absolutely no official efforts to block construction. To do so would be a perverse victory for Extremist Islam and a defeat for moderate Muslims. Of course, it would be a defeat for us as well because we would have betrayed our own principles. If these extremists "hate us for our freedoms" then we should under no circumstances allow one of our paramount freedoms, the practice and expression of religion free from government interference, to be weakened or destroyed by our own hands.

I'm of mixed mind on this. I would have preferred that this whole incident did not occur. That said, the rationale cited in the article for urging the Imam to rescind the "mosque" siting decision (i.e., outrage expressed by large segments of the American population) is a bit problematic. It seems that a right-wing blogger is assisted by Murdoch (NYPost and Fox News) in manufacturing this outrage.

If we as a nation allow the wingnut blogosphere and Murdoch to set public policy by manufacturing outrage, we're in a world of hurt. Murdoch and Fox are a much greater threat to America than this Imam and his cultural center.
