Yes I do, and want to think it was never right. In this life one maybe the hammer but in another the nail.

It has been replaced by a economic slavery in this country.

Barney
The economic slavery you mention was already well entrenched by our antebellum period. Planters and their apologists accurately described the free North's mill and factory workers as wage slaves.

If these white folks want to preserve their heritage maybe they should go back to the country from whence their ancestors came.

This is indeed why Billy Yank volunteered.

Some of them, not so much the conscripts.

Not sure this applies to what Shelby Foote said.

Prior to the enactment of the Civil War Military draft act all Billy Yanks were volunteers. All the American boys killed at Bull Run, Shiloh, Fredericksburg and Antietam, to name some of the worst, were volunteers. Shelby concisely stated why so many young men volunteered to fight the war - from their perspective.

A great example of the Confederacy's hipocracy is that they instituted a draft before the rights trampling Union. They said it was for the Cause which they later claim to have lost.

Well shit, Barney, why stop with the Confederacy? Why not just kick the statues of all of the founding fathers to the curb? Before the Confederacy, there was slavery in the USA, right? Hell, as late as 1840, there were still slaves in Connecticut. If we're talking about erasing the memories, values and deficiencies of a country that, at any point in its history, condoned slavery, why limit our attention to the South and Southern icons?

Someone torched a bust of Lincoln in Chicago this week, and earlier this week a pastor there called for the excision of icons of Washington. Maybe he was right? Jefferson owned slaves, and Al Sharpton is advocating de-funding the Jefferson Memorial. Is he right? Should we also de-fund the Washington Monument? Maybe some racist skin-heads and neo-Nazis can raise some money for upkeep of these sites, but it sounds like you'd agree that right-thinking folks shouldn't want their tax dollars funding these odes to racism?

Michelle Obama reminded us recently that the White House was built by slaves. Let's close that icon of subjugation down and current and future presidents can live elsewhere. And dammit, the US Capitol building was also built using slave labor. Let's knock it down, 'cuz certainly tax dollars are spent keeping that place up.

University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University? Either knock them all down or keep tax dollars away from those planes, all of which were constructed with slave labor.

Let's not stop until every public example of subjugation in the USA has been de-funded, defunct-ed, de-constructed, de-commissioned and dissed.
