Noone, your typo here made me think of a great name for the new NYC Islamic center.
Ready?
Sure?
Okay, here goes!
The Mosque of the Red Death!
(Sorry, Edgar.)

Didn't we just do this? Among other things apparently "moslem", basically a mispronunciation of Muslim in English, has an unflattering meaning in Arabic.

Again, so what? These facts are only relevant if you're arguing that they disqualify Muslims - or some Muslims - from enjoying the religious freedom here that they deny Christians in their countries of origin.
We're supposed to be better than that.

Sorry, your post gave me the idea that you thought they were permissive of other religions.

No, not at all. I just don't think we should use their intolerance to justify our own.

well, I know you are way smart but back around 1990 the term Moslem was used by the Turkish community in NYC not Muslim to describe their religion.
Muslim was the way the black population here refereed to themselves.
Yes I brought this up once before because it perplexes me. I remember after 911 that a few people I know were discussing the change in the media. Hence I am puzzled by your response and if it were a mispronunciation why is it listed as an alternative spelling for Muslim today?

This is the link I provided last time the issue was discussed. Apparently the interpretation of Moslem refers in arabic to someone who is not trustworthy. Hence, the followers of that faith prefer Muslim.

First time I ever used the search function over here. It works pretty well working in this small database.

thanks D the perfect article to answer my question,
from the article, "When Baby Boomers were children it was Moslem. The American Heritage Dictionary (1992) noted, "Moslem is the form predominantly preferred in journalism and popular usage. Muslim is preferred by scholars and by English-speaking adherents of Islam." No more. Now, almost everybody uses Muslim."
