UN Resolution

I have never had a very good grasp of the politics involved in this issue.... Could someone help me understand with a quick explanation?

Israel is in the process of taking over "the Palestinean territories" bit by bit. There's a few ways to argue that this is cool, but the public in the West has pretty much decided this is aggression, and is preventing peace, and stuff. So most nations are willing to go along with all the Moslem nations, and just about everyone else, with a UN Security Council resolution that says "Israel is wrong to keep on building more and more settlements in Palestine."

The US has always been on the "Israel right or wrong" side, willing to veto such resolutions. But Obama is not really an "Israel right or wrong" guy, and he gets along crappy with Israeli PM Netanyahu, since way back. Netty did some very insulting stuff playing with the Republicans in Congress. Anyway, being no longer in a place where he has to fear the Israeli lobby messing with his political career, Obama felt free to simply abstain in the Security Council this time, rather than veto the condemn-Israel resolution.

So, it passed. Don't know if it has any teeth, probably not, but it still makes the Israelis official international naughty people.

Trump of course gets along wonderful with Netanyahu (for now at least), and is saying how awful this is, while the Israelis and their mouthpieces scream bloody murder.

There is a reason they call the part of Jerusalem the Jewish quarter. It's been Jewish for 1000 years. So, now suddenly it is not supposed to be Jewish by UN decree.

Needless to say, you have no understanding about Jerusalem or Israel. There are 4 quarters in Jerusalem - the Arab quarter, the Christian quarter, the Jewish quarter and the Armenian quarter and FWIW, the Arab quarter is the largest of the four. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the UN resolution.

The resolution addresses settlements in the West Bank that the US and most other nations in the world (and even Israel in many instances) consider illegal. However, Bibi has been forced to buy into the legality of many of these settlements (and is now pushing for a law to make them legal even though significant parts of the land has been stolen from its rightful Palestinian owners) because of the hardliners (e.g., the Jewish Home Party) that he brought into his coalition in order to form a government after the last hotly contested election. The far right in Israel will not be satisfied until Israel takes all of Judea and Samaria (i.e., the West Bank) from its rightful Palestinian owners.

Double check. I think you will find that relinquishing part of Jerusalem is part of the deal.

Just how pissed would we be here if the Native Americans started putting up apartments and implanted settlers on this stolen land one day? With the UN's support!

The Israelis will never have peace until they figure out how to play nice with their neighbors.

Since the US is one of the permanent members of the Security Council, any resolution it vetos in private will never be brought to a full UN vote, or enacted if voted on by all.

Obama and Bibi are enemies, so Obama did nothing.

Trump and Bibi are financial pals, and Trump's pal that is going to be appointed wants Jerusalem to be the new Israeli capital, which will start a massive pan Arab war. Trump doesn't care. It will get very, very interesting.

If the Allies wanted to give the Jews a country at the end of WWII they should have given them New Jersey.

Only problem was that the Brits promised everyone Palestine at the end of WWI.
