Great Charles Blow column. After I read it, I read another of his columns, entitled Trump’s Rural White America. He quotes a Gallup 'working paper,' and gives a link.
I downloaded the paper. Seems they have detailed data of 125,000 people, and they've been analyzing to see what correlates with Trump support. Here's the last paragraph of their conclusion:
Quote:

Finally, the results concerning race, age, gender, ethnicity, and religion imply that political behavior is not related directly and neatly to economic self-interest or class position. One could argue that blue collar men would disproportionately benefit from Trump’s policies on trade and immigration, but as discussed above, these factors are relatively unimportant. As others have found, cultural views and social identity are likely quite important in affecting political preference.

Boiled down a little, they are saying it's not the economy, stupid. It's cultural views and social identity. I take this to mean, pretty much, the 'cultural view' that their 'social identity' is threatened by immigration and demographic change.
Race comes into it! As of course was bloody obvious to begin with, as one looks at the racial correlation of support and opposition to Trump.

So much for draining the swamp. A Koch Bros ally running education.

The King of Bankruptcy for Commerce Secretary
"Wilbur Ross, the billionaire investor considered the “king of bankruptcy” for buying beaten-down companies with the potential to deliver profits, is expected to be President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for commerce secretary, two officials with knowledge of the decision said.
Ross helped shape the Trump campaign’s economic agenda, particularly its hard-line stance on the need to renegotiate — or even withdraw from — free trade agreements. That position resonated with the working class voters who were instrumental in delivering Trump’s upset victory. Elevating Ross to a position in his Cabinet could suggest that Trump intends to nurture the nationalist streak that was one of the hallmarks of his campaign." WaPo
Of course Trump wants one of these 'vulture economics' guys running the Commerce Dept. SMH.

I'm thinking of heading down there for a couple of weeks this winter. They now have cheap non-stop flights to San Jose from BWI.

I'm not leaving the United States, not permanently anyhow.
Of course race is a factor. It always has been.
But, I think race is much less of a factor than most Liberals believe it is. "Cultural Identity", to me represents more of a urban vs. rural aspect.
