The NYTimes wouldn't agree to a strictly off the record meeting, knowing that Trump would mischaracterize what happened, and insisited upon an on the record interview after a brief meet & greet with the Times publisher. The Times, unlike the broadcast media, did the right thing and didn't allow themselves to be played by Trump. Good for them.
