So, David, what law or arbitrated legal judgement is Iran observing when they take hostages? They still have US citizens hostage there right now, along with citizens of other countries that they are holding hostage.

If you answered "none", you would be correct. Hostage taking is the act of a rogue state that would just as soon wipe it's ass with a law or arbitrated legal agreement than follow one. Which is, in turn, why I think it's folly to attempt to negotiate with Iran. It's also folly to give, return, or (insert your favorite verb here) any funds given the likelihood those funds will be used for no good.
So, screw Iran until they decide to grow up and start observing some of the laws or international norms that you seem so concerned about.
